They were all headed to different destinations and living their own lives, but whatever force or reason that brought them together in this same time and moment is beyond contemplating. I guess we just have to be contented thinking about our own business.

“Everything happens for a reason”, a cliché goes, but it does happen all the time. We just don’t stop and think about it. One great thing about waiting is that we have the chance to meditate on life’s freakishness and realize things we don’t normally encounter on our usual stream of thought.

Like if I used this particular brand of pencil, does this mean a great deal? Or if I bought the blue blouse instead of the pink one, would it make a difference? Or owning a Nokia phone instead of a Samsung or Motorola change my life? Is “everything happens for a reason” applicable only on significant things like flunking the June 2006 Nurse Licensure Examinations, with everybody knowing you didn’t make it. But trying again on December of the same year, exempting yourself from the leakage scum? Or heeding your gut feeling of not getting on the jeepney even if you really wanted to, only to discover that that certain vehicle met an accident and that you would be one of those people walking the path to light earlier than expected?

I stop and look around. I saw a little boy, about 2 years old, as tall as this adolescent guy’s knees, holding hands. What A pretty sight to behold.

Another was a mother with guiding her baby who was learning how to walk. The determination radiates in this kid’s eyes and the effort it took for her to raise those chubby legs and land those little feet on the ground is astounding.

There was also this old lady on a wheelchair with a teenager about 20 years watching over her. It’s quite a rare thing to see teens hanging out with old people. But these simple gestures would really mean a lot.

Take time to stop and think, for it is in the little things that we see meanings that are larger than life itself.
Poetry: The Portrait

by: Megan Docdocil Padilla

Life indeed has it's own rules. You cannot dictate what you want to happen but you can decide what you want to attain. Being in this world of chaos and discriminations we tend sometimes to run and leave behind from where we came from. We want something that is so important for us. Something that would be a completion for our short stay here in this world.

Well, Victoria is one of those dreamers. Since she was a child, she hates going to school. Not because she doesn't know her lessons but because of this yearly celebrated occasion in her school." The Family Day". Yes, she really hates that special moment. Everyone was happy together with their parents, eating together, bringing foods and sharing funny jokes and conversations. But Victoria? she felt jealous because she was just only accompanied by her aunt and a friend oftentimes. Her classmates keep on teasing her that she has no mom and dad. That she was just nothing but a trash!

It hurts a lot everytime she could hear those mockery from her classmates." If only that dad could just stay to work here, and not in Europe, everything would be fine". "And if only mom could stay here and work here as a nurse, no one could hurt me". She said quitely without knowing tears falling from her eyes. From then on, she really wants to have a family picture together with them. Cause that's the only way to stop her classmates from teasing her.

Time goes by and now she's turning 18. She was so excited because her parents promised that they'll be going home 2 days before her birthday. And her long wait arrives. It is the day that she expects and as promised that her special guest would arrive. The doorbell rangs and she suddenly opened the door. She was wrong! It was not her parents but it was a delivery wherein she receives a gift. When suddenly she notice a note attach with it which says: " We know that you want this, we are not sure if we could come but as long as you've received this, do not open it. Yet just on your birthday. We love you!"

December 20, 2004 around 7:30 in the because her parents did not arrived and does not even called her that they could not come. She thought of cancelling her party but no choice, everything was prepared and the celebration must go on. Around 7 pm, the party started and everyone was enjoying except for Victoria. When suddenly she received a call from her dad's employer ." Victoria, we don't want to destroy the fun going on there but this is emergency. We've found out that an International plane crashed in Europe and sad to say your parents was one of those passengers. We're very sorry......."

Victoria was shocked. She blame herself that she got angry from them and hasn't given a chance to talk and say sorry. She cries a lot, run away from the party and locked herself in the room. Suddenly, she remembered the gift that was delivered to her 2 days ago. Without expecting too much, she opened it. She was surprised! It was more than any gift that she received in her entire life. This was her dream and the long wait is over. " A Portrait of their family personalize by her dad." Her dreams do come true but she lost the most beautiful portrait she could ever had."
________________________________

Copyright © 2006 The Paulinian Online.
All rights reserved.

Email your questions, comments,
suggestions and contributions
to paulinianonline@yahoo.com.

Tell us what you think

At last, the fifth and final issue of the previous school year has finally been released. Joining the College Press Conference (COPRE) and Awards was like being a firework. We were planted here and there to compete in the different on-the-spot writing contests and we were ignited do an article for only 50 minutes. Tremendous pressure was building inside each of us as we placed ourselves in unfamiliar contests and overwhelming tasks. But, boom! We ended the event with a bang. We grabbed four awards.

Just like a firework being planted to the ground, I felt uneasy at the beginning. It was the first time the school publication joined again in the COPRE after several years and it was my first time to join a journalism competition. More quakes followed when I and my co-staffers were reassigned to other tasks at the very start of the conference because only one participant is allowed per contest. We ended up writing articles in the categories far from our expertise. Even though the competition had a shaky start, we managed to calm the pressure by laughing with each other and by thinking that we joined only for the experience and that we went there to also strengthen our camaraderie and to build rapport with other campus journalists from WVSU, UP, CPU, JBLCF, USLS and other schools.

At the awarding ceremony, the firework exploded. We grabbed four awards! We reaped awards in Photojournalism, Sports Writing, Feature Writing and Magazine Cover. It was totally unexpected.

Above all, the event gave us another award: Wisdom. On a personal note, I learned that cramming can indeed bring wonders; that not expecting anything brings a lot of surprises; that I can do an article for 50 minutes –a personal first; and that doing what one loves best is the most rewarding thing to do.

And of course, this event also proved that Paulinians excel in every endeavor that they pursue given the grace of God and the determination to succeed.

Let me take this opportunity to thank God, my family, friends, co-staffers, my current and past teachers, my batch, and my alma mater. You made it all possible! Thank you!

Joseph Peñaflorida

-------------------------------------------------

We bagged awards at the COPRE after a seven-year hiatus! We're making history people! Fate has its twists and turns and what we had there was unexpected. There were sudden changes and boy we were shocked! Nah! To make the long story short, we were practically troubleshooting. In the name of the paper, go!

Kidding aside, it showed that Paulinians are flexible and can adapt to certain stressors and accomplish a task with a bang! Through hardwork, prayer and support of each other, we made it! God is good. We give Him back the glory.

Monna Mae Gildore

----------------------------------------------------------

It was the first time our publication had the chance to join the COPRE. We felt privileged. I was assigned to be the school's representative for English Feature Writing. What I have realized is that we, Paulinians, are very much flexible. Our group which composed of Vennie, Monna, Joseph, Marian, Dwight, Alex, Kit and I were assigned with two different assignments. For instance, Joseph has to write on both news writing and sports writing. But to find out, we only had to have 1 school representative for each category. And so during the contest proper, we had to reassign our tasks again. Although we distributed ourselves with short notice, some of us even brought home the bacon. It is not only the winning but the experience that counts. The experience taught us that we have a lot to learn in the realm of Journalism and that we should still continue to develop our skills in writing, not only in creative writing but formal writing as well. Likewise, this experience taught me that as Paulinians, we really have the creative zest for writing.

I was tasked to choose a topic and write 8 paragraphs about it in approximately 50 minutes. What I chose was a review about Pinoy Big Brother. Since it was feature, I was a bit informal and I wrote it in a creative manner. Well, I believe Pinoy Big Brother is a positive reality TV show. I mean, it is not for popularity but then the house mates get to sacrifice their cigarette smoking, their hair, being allergic to tattoos, and their pompous lifestyle for the benefit of the less fortunate people. Filipinos as we are, we are to be more aware of our Filipino roots and values we possess. I wrote about it positively even though I thought Jesica Zafra would be the judge who is a bit cynical. The funny thing about it is that when the moderator told us to pass our papers, I was still in my fourth paragraph. Then that was the time I knew “cramming” oh so perfectly. Nevertheless, I was so absorbed by it. Guess what? My 5th till 8th paragraphs were only made up of two sentences –so many ideas, such little time! I had no choice of course but to pass. I was totally hopeless after it. We lined for submission and the person in front of me wrote about: “PBB, depressing and disgusting.” Next, it was my turn to pass and the title read: “PBB, an inspiration to all.” Totally contradicting, don't you think? Our eyes met and we smiled both.

I was not able to finish the entire Competition and Awards Night because I was here facilitating for the Nurses' Week Celebration. “Pinoy Ako” Awarding Ceremony came and my phone beeped, “Teetit...teetit.” It was Monna. Her text message read, “Manang Kwi, congratulations you won 3rd place English Feature Writing.” I was happy. Definitely, God is good! May God bless the Fellowship of the Pen. More power to the Paulinian.

Ma. Tilos, MSN, RN, IMCI Coordinator, Mrs. Maria Geralyn Gotico, RN, IMCI Training Course Director, IMCI Facilitators and IMCI trained BSN Faculty.

Mrs. Gotico showed excerpts of the videotaped classroom instruction on IMCI in Level III and IMCI-related activities in the community setting of the BSN IV group. Mrs. Tilos demonstrated an actual lecture discussion and selected BSN II, III, and IV students acted as actual students.

An open forum followed the discussion. Mrs. Elizabeth Joven, IMCI Coordinator of the DOH-CO shared her insights and appreciation for the support of SPU Iloilo to the IMCI implementation. She said that the university had pioneered the model IMCI pre-service training curriculum in the country which was one of the very reasons why WHO members chose the school for their observation visit.

The final part of program was concluded with insights from both students and faculty on how IMCI has enhanced their skills and how it touched their lives. The seminar ended at 6:30 pm. Before leaving for dinner, Sr. Carolina Agravante, SPC joined the group for informal conversations.

Copyright © 2005 The Paulinian Online.
All rights reserved.

Email your questions, comments,
suggestions and contributions
to paulinianonline@yahoo.com.

SPU Iloilo, Bongga kicks off Quo Vadis

by Prince Cielo

St. Paul University Iloilo, in cooperation with GMA TV 6 Western Visayas, kicked off its 60 years celebration of Paulinian education and service themed “Quo Vadis!” in an array of Paulinian talents showcased at the variety show Bongga held on November 5, 2005 at the university’s multi-purpose hall.

The program started with an invocation followed by the Philippine National Anthem and the welcome address delivered by SPU Iloilo President, Sr. Carolina Agravante, SPC.
